DebugView++

A fast, filterable log viewer for Windows — the OutputDebugString viewer I always wanted.

C++ · Windows · BSL-1.0

Summary

DebugView++ collects, views and filters application logs and highlights the messages that matter. It started as a viewer for Win32 OutputDebugString output, in the spirit of Sysinternals DebugView, and grew into a general log viewer that can also tail files and read from ADB logcat, serial ports, sockets and UDP.

Why it exists

OutputDebugString is the oldest and simplest way to make a Windows program observable, but the classic viewers struggle once a system gets chatty. DebugView++ stays fast and responsive at tens of thousands of lines per second, and its filters let you cut straight to the lines you are looking for.

Key features

  • Single self-contained executable; an installer is provided but not required
  • Fast, responsive UI, even with more than 50,000 incoming lines per second
  • Captures both Win32 and Global Win32 messages
  • Tails ASCII and UTF files — just drag a file into the window
  • Include, exclude, highlight, track and stop filters, optionally with regular expressions
  • Linked views, process colours and tabbed views
